Giro Victory for a Giro Rookie
The 1980 Giro d’Italia developed into a battle of contenders. Contender from France Bernard "Badger" Hinault, a Giro rookie, was already a 2 time winner of the Tour de France. He is a powerful climber and extraordinary ITT rider against the clock.
A very close race was blown apart by Hinault on stage 20 from Cles to Sondrio. The stage included the brutal climb of the Passo Stelvio. Jean-Rene Bernaudeau, Hinault’s teammate, attacked on the climb. The Badger bridged the gap and the two teammates climbed to an over 8 minute time gain. Jean-Rene Bernaudeau won the stage and Hinault pulled on the Maglia Rosa with two stages to Milan.
Bernard Hinault rode into Milan to claim the prestigious Giro d’Italia victory.
SPECIAL NOTE: With the 1980 Giro victory in his first attempt, Bernard Hinault became the first rider to win all three Grand Tours (Tour 1978, Vuelta 1978 and Giro 1980) as a rookie in each Tour.
